Costco

J and I had brunch with friends, then went to Costco. I had never been but heard rumors. They were all true. It makes Sam's Club look like a truck stop swap meet. The produce was gorgeous and cheap, although I did feel bad for buying 2 lbs. of Chilean blueberries, they were only $4!

Their liquor store was pretty awesome too but they didn't have any of the comically huge bottles. They stopped at liter bottles and really wanted a massive 1.75 L bottler of Gran Marnier or Jagermeister. Oh well, guess I'll have to stick with regular liquor stores for those behemoths.

Of course then J reminded me of the Costco scene from Idiocracy and it made me sad.

For brunch however, I made (what we're calling and might actually be called) ho cakes. 2 cups of self-rising cornmeal, 1 cup of sugar (or less to taste), 1 cup of hot water. That's it. We played around a bit with the amount of water but it was all delicious. No syrup needed for these sweet cakes but our friends' fruit salad on top was just what it needed. And some bacon. Simple and delicious.

Then we threw down on some Mario Kart Wii. I did okay but there is definitely a learning curve. As soon as I'm done writing and defending, it will be mine.

Hope you have a great week!

Wii-Mania!

I'm so glad that J and I picked up a Wii this summer. I literally can't go into a gaming store without overhearing someone ask for a Wii. I would sell mine right now for $400. Did you hear? Mario Kart Wii is coming out in sometime in Spring 2008 and it will be online! Finally I can battle to my hearts content! Nintendo is also claiming that first timers will be able to keep up with veterans. We shall see Nintendo. And it comes with a wheel too! Check the video from E3 here.

I'm also very excited about Wii Fitness. That one will be packaged with a board that can tell where your center of gravity is and will involve games that have you heading soccer balls away, yoga, and push-ups. They say it will have 4 genres of games for a total of 40 or so games. Sounds like a great way to exercise on those chilly Sat. mornings.

This was brought on by noting the 2 people standing in front of the local GameStop at 9 am when the store opens at 10 am. I hope they had a couple Wiis in stock. The other Wii was at the mall GameStop (which wouldn't let me play any of their demo games because there were "too many people" in the store during the holidays, there were 8 people in there including the 2 workers, whatever Bud) where a trio of friends waited in front of Target to get a Wii and they were 67th in line. Guess how many Wiis Target had? Right, 66. Doh! So they were giving their friend a hard time because he wanted to stop for a breakfast sandwich instead of going straight to Target (which sells food by the way). I hope he learned his lesson.

J and I opted to donate money in people's names for Christmas this year. We adopted a sea turtle, a sea otter, a snow leopard and an elephant for our family this year. We're not sure how this is going to go over, but I think it will be okay once or twice. Next year real tangible presents will be purchased. We adopted these animals through the non-profit Defenders of Wildlife.

What did you get for people?

Beer: the cause of and solution to, all of life's problems.

- Homer Simpson, from the episode where Mayor Quimby tries out prohibition in Springfield. I know I've used it before but dammit, it's one of my favorites.

Not the greatest weekend in college football. The Clemson Tigers offense let the Virginia Tech score waaay too many points off turnovers and we had some trouble tackling people on special teams. And we lost. Again. To a conference opponent.

The unbeatable Trojans of Southern California lost to the Stanford Trees, which means the SEC's own LSU Tigers inherit the #1 spot in the nation. That should make Shaq and my uncle very happy. I'm sure there are other famous LSU fans, just let me know.

Whilst Clemson was getting their ass handed to them, we went to the newlyweds' house and played Mario Party 8! It's so nice that in this day and age you can put video games and other fun activities on your wedding registry. It has tons of mini-games and you can just pick which ones you want to play. There are also a couple different modes to play these mini-games. Some are set up like a giant board game. One is even set up like Monopoly where you put coins you've won into property and develop it from a 1 star hotel to a 4 star hotel. Very cool. My favorite might have been the 1 vs. 3 games. The previous night we only had 3 players so the computer had to step up and play but on Sat. J (who skipped tailgating to sleep all day) was up for playing and the 4 player mode was amazing! Only have 2 players? Don't fret, they have tons of games for just 2 players. For playing games you get cards which you can trade in for other games. We bought a moped game for 50 cards and it was amazing! You hold the Wiimote sideways with the 1 button being the gas and 2 was the brakes. I completely dominated this game. It wasn't too difficult, almost like driving a car. If you are going wide, hit the brakes a bit until you start coming back to the middle of the road. If you're in too tight and turning into the inside of the turn, you're not going fast enough.

The Formula 1 race was fairly exciting. First off, great job Red Bull! Red Bull Renault had David Coulthard coming in at 8th in the last points position. Scuderia Toro Rosso - Ferrari (Italian Red Bull with Ferrari engines) had Sebastian Vettel (who replaced Scott Speed who I'll get to in a second) coming in at 4th! His teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi came in 6th! Toro Rosso leapt from dead last in constructor's points to 7th out of 12 in one race!

Lewis Hamilton finally showed that he's human after all and went wide as he turned into the pits and got stuck in the kitty litter. He was leading the race but that one mistake ended his race. Maybe his team should've mentioned that pit lane was wet and to be extra super careful, but he's still in the driver's points lead. He's 22 and leading the driver's championship in his rookie year. He has 107, teammate Fernando Alonso has 103 and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen at 100, with one race to go in Sao Paolo, Brazil. It's going to be a great finish to the season. That race is in two weeks and would be a good one to watch.

In other F1 driver news, Jacques Villeneuve made his debut in NASCAR's Nextel Cup series, he finished on the lead lap and in 21st. He has been getting used to only turning left in the Craftsman Truck series and I saw that he crashed in that race on Fri. or Sat.

Scott Speed is getting used to the "turn left and then straight" strategy in the ARCA series, one of NASCAR's many training series as everyone tries to make it into the Winston, sorry, Nextel Cup. Speed finished 7th. Great job guys. Keep turning left and hoping they add some more road courses to the mix, and I might even watch a whole race.

Just for a refresher on why I don't like NASCAR: they're benefiting at the expense of other forms of racing (rally, sports car), they turn left entirely too much while ignoring other directions, and a new one I just added this weekend they were interviewing a winner of a lower level oval race. He said his winning strategy was "to stay at the bottom of the race track on the inside". That's it. I suppose that is harder than it sounds especially if you don't start in front but that does not make for exciting racing. Oh yeah, another aspect I hate is that wrecks are just part of the action. Wrecks in other series are horrible and kill people but it's all part of the show in NASCAR. I think Dale Earnhardt would agree with me. Sure it's part of racing but it should not be a highlight. Rubbin' is racin' but not slamming into the wall at 130+ mph.

Brian Marquis is a whiner. He's a "returning student" at UMass and was upset when his TA curved his "A minus" to a C. I obviously completely agree with the TA. Since he's a paralegal, he feels that a C on his transcript will destroy his career and his life and so he has decided to take it to court. Insert "some lawyers are stupid and useless" joke here.

This was brought to my attention by Common Good, who is trying to bring common sense back to America. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Big things poppin'

My weekend went well. Friday we went downtown a bit, bar hopped, ran into some Chemistry folk and then ran into some Clemson Sports Car Club folk at Nick's, the official bar of the Clemson Sports Car Club. Nick's has a great selection of beer, both bottles and tap, and is never out of it, like Keith Street eternally is. But if you're low on cash, Nick's has the $1 can of Schlitz for the discerning broke college student pallet. Then back to Protege's for some hot Wii action. It was Protege's bachelor party.

Then I slept in, caught some college football, went to the store and got the ingredients for my BBQ chicken sandwiches for the bachelor pre-game party. Clemson beat LA-Monroe, GA Tech destroyed my dear ol' Samford Bulldogs by a score of 69-14 (Samford usually doesn't play ranked teams but the GA Tech coach, Chan Gailey, used to coach at Samford). I was disappointed that Wake Forest couldn't beat Nebraska but I'm sure USC will take care of that this weekend.

Sorry, got distracted by college american football. Marinated the chicken in BBQ sauce, made some cupcakes (I had planned on filled cupcakes but didn't have a pastry bag and my improvised zip-loc pastry bag had a major failure, so they turned into regular yellow cupcakes with vanilla frosting), showered and then took a nap for the long night to come.

Made it to Protege's (Acura, Protege's fiance, was in Miami with J and others for her bachelorette party; they had a much better time; I'll share tomorrow), tossed the meat on the grill and some sliced onion, started drinking on the quarter keg (30 L) of Spaten Optimator:

It was a pretty good doppelbock. I like my beer just a tad darker and if I'm trying to float a keg, alot lighter, but it had a good note, good taste and a good, if slightly bitter, finish. Here's a couple other reviews that are fairly accurate.

After food, beer, football and Wii, we called in the designated driver (Subaru's wife who didn't go to Miami) and headed off to the strip club. Yay for boobies! We went to Platinum Plus who have a terrible website that I won't link. Not a huge amount of hot ladies, some nice, some not so nice, some busted (I think those are for the truckers), but most everyone got a lap dance and tipped some ladies and successfully got boobs rubbed in their faces. There was one drunken stripper who was being entirely inappropriate and we couldn't wait for her to get as far away from us as possible.

We left after a few hours to return and keep the party going. Most everyone left about 3 or 4 but I stayed with Protege and his two friends from TX until we couldn't take it anymore and finally the party stopped just as the sky was getting lighter signaling the coming of dawn about 6:30. Got home, fed the cats, relieved some strip club tension, and went to sleep.

Oh, also on Saturday I watched qualifying for the F1 Gran Prix of Monza. Then I woke up about 11 or 12 and watched the race! Sorry, it's the F1 Gran Premio d'Italia 2007. Quali was exciting. Kimi Raikonnen had a very big wreck in the last practice session but the mechanics were able to salvage his engine and put it in the spare chassis and got him running. Incredible. The amazing Lewis Hamilton timed it right and was one of the last few guys to finish their lap within the time limit but he was 0.037 seconds behind the defending world champ and teammate, Fernando Alonso. Congrats to "Quick" Nick Heidfeld for outqualifying Kimi and Ferrari.

The race went well. David Coulthard got brake-checked by Giancarlo "Not gonna have a job at Renault next year" Fisichella and damaged his front wing which sent DC flying off-course once he was in a high speed turn and needed his front wing to generate some downforce. Fernando and Lewis blasted out to a great start. It got a little hairy in Turn 2 with some wheel to wheel contact between Lewis and Felipe Massa's Ferrari, but everyone made it out okay. Felipe had a serious suspension issue and had to withdraw from the race which took all the pressure off the McLaren boys who had already run away with the race and that's how it ended. Fernando, Lewis (both Vodafone McLaren Mercedes) and Kimi for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. The top 8 was rounded out by the two BMW Saubers of Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, Nico Rosberg's Williams-Toyota in 6th, Heikki Kovaleinen in his ING Renault and with the last point of the day, Jenson Button got his Honda to behave like a Honda to come in 8th. Big congrats to Honda for scoring points and actually making out of the third and second qualifying sessions. Lewis Hamilton had an amazing pass of Kimi to retake 2nd place late in the race.

Another big congratulations on Fernando Alonso with his 100th career start in F1 and even making it a solid win!

Then I tried to watch the Indy Racing League race in Chicago. I couldn't do it. It's a bloody circle. I just like my racing to have left AND right turns, or be a much smaller oval so it's pure chaos. I fell asleep and awoke to Ashley Judd being interviewed which meant that her hubby Dario Franchitti won. I just saw that he wants to go to NASCAR in 2008. I also heard that former F1 driver, Jacques Villeneuve, is looking to get into NASCAR. I think he's gonna start in that truck series they have and then make the jump.

And that is one of my big problems with NASCAR. They have so much money that they're taking quality drivers from other racing series. But until they start stealing WRC drivers and F1 drivers, I won't mind too much. And I NEVER see that happening. Can you imagine going from racing through the woods and trees (World Rally Championship) or the best racetracks in the world (F1) to racing on an oval? The on-track action would be different (which is the only thing NASCAR has going for it) but the actual track would put them to sleep. I have to go around that thing how many times? Ugh, no thanks.

Oh, I also watched the Red Bull Air Race Series. Wow, it's like autocross with a damn plane! They set up these huge pylons in a large course and these guys fly their planes through and around them. Here's a pretty good intro video.

Happy Monday! And tune in tomorrow for the bachlorette party recap. There will be less racing talk, I promise.

Wiitournament

A games and activities parties went down Friday night at Protege and Acura's house. We mourned for Acura because Connecticut finally caught up with her and was going to make her pay a big fine for not having her car inspected since 2004, so she lost her CT plate and had to become one of us and get a SC license plate. If you're worried about passing inspection or if your car is street legal, bring it to SC, we'll put anything on the road!

I've finally resigned myself to referring to myself as a South Carolinian. I've lived here long enough and have the license that is about to expire to prove it. I was hoping that I would be gone before I had to renew it on my birthday this year but it wasn't in the cards.

I traded in my Xbox and accessories and picked up Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. So far I'm only being chased by angry townspeople and it's already scary. Not even one zombie or monster yet. I freed a wolf that was in a bear trap so helpfully he'll come back and help me out. You can't strafe (meaning walk sideways) in the game so you have to walk straight ahead into the room and then look around. Not the most reassuring way to enter a room.

The house and mini-yard are coming together. I cleared out some weeds and crappy plants from out front on Sunday and was rewarded with a large blister that immediately opened up and stings. I put some antibiotic cream on it so maybe it'll heal faster.

Now that Facebook is open to everyone, lots of people have tracked me down. A handful of bloggers, Doc in the Box, Princess of Power, Rally Girl Amy ,the Evilest Julie I know, a long lost high school friend and some high school classmates and teachers are on the list. The long lost high school friend I hadn't spoken for at least 7 years. His family moved from the DR to Mississippi and we visited them from Birmingham once while they were there and that was the last time. He actually works for a large clothing store that is near 4th Avenue and whose headquarters is in NYC but there main operations center is in Jackson, MS. I guess real estate is cheaper in MS than NY. Imagine that.

If you're on Facebook and would like to be my friend, you can email me for my last name or you can tell me yours or you can just find me, searching Seth and clemson would probably be a great start.

Errands to run today, group meetings to present in and lab notebooks to get up to date, so Seth away!

Happy Independent Nation Day!

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July and remembered the sacrifice of our forefathers so that we can live in one of the greatest countries in the world. I hope everyone enjoyed their rights and freedoms as well.

Transformers (which I just realized is Paramount which is Viacom of which my grandfather owns stock) had the biggest Tuesday in movie history. Of course what other big budget studio films have been released on Tuesdays? I still refuse to see it in protest against Michael Bay. I just know it won't live up to my childhood dreams but if you saw it and liked it, I'm glad.

We had some people over and ate and played Wii and watched some South Park. Protege and fiance brought over a couscous chicken salad and a shrimp avocado salad that were both phenomenal. Subaru and wife brought apple pie, ice cream and chips and dip. We made sangria, ribs and I whipped up some chicken real quick. I might've been the only person to eat the chicken which is fine with me cuz I loved it.

I'm almost positive now that it's our wireless adapter that is preventing us from using the internet. Both our Wii and the departmental laptop can connect wirelessly through our neighbor's internet but our PC can't. Current course of action is to get a new wireless adapter from Best Buy or the like and see if that fixes it. Then we can start splitting the wireless bill with our neighbor.

Also if you have a Wii and would like to be friends and send messages and whatever else the magical Wii can do, send me an email with your Wii code and I'll add you and we can hang out.

Isn't there a Wii web browser? I'll have to fix my blog so that it is Wii-friendly now that I can check it out and see if it works.

Off to work. J flies out tomorrow to visit a friend in DC so it'll be me and the cats this weekend.
