No post since last Tuesday?!?!?!? For shame! Sorry blog and its readers. My bad.

My mother-in-law arrived yesterday morning. She'll be here for a week. We're gonna fire up the grill and make some salmon and BBQ chicken tonight. It's gonna be good.

Still working and I need to continue writing. Writing will always be on my to do list and I need to work on it more than I have been.

Please keep the victims of the most recent campus shooting at Northern Illinois University in mind and help the administrators and campus police all over the country come up with a rational way to make our schools safer. We might even want to talk about gun control some too, since it turns out that this guy and the Virginia Tech shooter bought guns from the same place. I don't have a huge problem with most gun owners and most guns but I've always wondered about the gun show loophole when buying guns. Normally you have to wait at least 3 days so they can check your background and make sure you're not a criminal. But if there is a "gun show", then you can get your gun on the spot. The NIU guy didn't have a criminal record, so it probably wouldn't have stopped him but it would've caught the VT guy. Also please note that all grad students do not want to shoot people. I've been a grad student for years now and have never wanted to bust into a classroom, guns blazing. Even with the old west moustache I'm currently sporting. That's what video games are for. Release some anger against society in an electronic and safe way.

I watched 2 episodes and I think the quotes canceled each other out.

Cooter asked why we blog yesterday. I think I still blog for the same reason I started but added a few other reasons. I enjoy it as a time to write and express myself. Sure I would like some constructive criticism so that I might become a better writer but that will come later, maybe in a classroom setting of some sort. An online diary that is updateable anywhere there is a computer and internet access would be another reason why I blog. I haven't yet started reading through my archives but when I do, it'll be a nice stroll down memory lane. So far it represents a little less than 50% of my time at Clemson and plan to continue this as long as I can. I might switch to Wordpress and buy my own domain name, and when that happens you will be the first to know. Promise.

I also strive to share some knowledge with you and in turn receive some from you via comments and your blogs. We're all trying to make the world a better place (I hope).

So ESC's labmate has full blown cancer. It always strikes at your heart but even more if you're a scientist who is in lab everyday. Was she exposed to something? Do we have it in our lab? Was it a combination of things that slowly, day by day, took their toll on her immune system? How safe am I? Could I be safer? Maybe it had nothing to do with her job and work environment and it was just some extremely bad luck? No amount of questions and even some answers wouldn't help working through this terrible affliction. It's a day by day thing now and in the hands of well trained doctors and maybe even a higher power or two. I can't even imagine what her family is going through. She also has a son who must be a wreck.

Also ran across this yesterday. Dr. Sean of Doc in the Box is currently separated from his wife. It wasn't one big thing but lots of the little things that pile up and if you aren't careful, come crashing out all at the same time and can tear things apart. Heather, aka Tragic Saturn, took her clothes and some other items and went to her parents house, hopefully to think and sort some things out. My hope is they get some professional help and give it another solid effort before throwing it all away.

No happy thought to leave you with today. The world sucks today.

I have a fairly long list of things to do around the house to get ready to fly to Orlando tomorrow. (Yes, my attention to minutiae in the face of sadness and decay is a coping mechanism)

I just made my list of around the house projects that I would like to get done this week and into the weekend. I won't get into it. One is finish painting my helmet for the autocross this Saturday. It's south of ATL at their NASCAR track, the Atlanta Motor Speedway. They have some nice huge lots and the first car isn't off until 7 pm, so we'll be racing under the lights. Should be lots of fun.

But what else is going on in Blogland? We'll start with the good news first:
Our dear Waiter over at Waiterrant turned in his manuscript for his book. Congrats!

Even bigger news is that Rob the Bouncer's book is out! Hooray! Way to go Rob! Standing on the Box was one of the first blogs I got hooked on and he transformed his pseudo success into a real book that you can buy at your local bookery! I will definitely have to pick up a copy. I wish I could buy it directly from him and make him a little more money but that isn't how it works these days with agents and publishing companies. So next time I'm in Barnes & Noble, I'll pick up a copy. They better stock it or they'll be hell to pay.

Okay, ready for the bad news? Varla, our favorite vixen, suffered a horrible loss recently. Kyu-Jin has passed away. He leaves behind a loving sister, Anoki, and a loving mother in Varla. We'll miss you.


I'll keep this post up for a bit too, just for Kyu-Jin.
